This workshop is for you if you are currently experiencing any stage of the menopausal transition in your life (perimenopause, menopause or postmenopause). Whether you are completely new to yoga or have a regular yoga practice, the workshop will give you the time and space to explore the benefits of yoga at this very special time in your life.

The title and theme for this workshop are drawn from an inspirational book by Suza Francina; Yoga & The Wisdom of Menopause. What I love about this book is that it presents menopause as an energetic and spiritual resource rather than as a nasty set of symptoms to be fought.

“Menopause is an opportunity for the fullest blossoming of a woman’s power, wisdom and creativity. It is a bridge to a new phase of life when many women report feeling more confident, empowered and energized. Menopause is a metamorphosis, a complete change at the cellular level” (Francina 2003: xvii)

And yoga is a perfect way of tuning in to this resource. It is true that yoga can truly help with hormonal imbalance, hot flushes, crazy mood swings, insomnia, fuzzy thinking, extreme tiredness etc. But the meeting of yoga and menopause brings something much deeper and long lasting; a finding of profound peace and quiet that you may find you’re longing for. And with this comes renewed vitality and creativity.

We will explore a range of practices: breathing (pranayama), physical postures (asana), mudras (energy seals) and meditation. Most of the physical postures will be restorative and we’ll use lots of bolsters, cushions, blankets to make sure that we’re deeply comfortable and can rest. We will also practice some standing postures to develop bone density as a counter to the effects of osteoporosis. The workshop will end with a delicious guided relaxation. The over all effect, I hope, will be to leave you feeling deeply nourished and rejuvenated and with ideas for a home practice to come back to whenever you want.

If you’d like to find out more about the workshop, please email me on Rebecca@theriverroom.org.uk and check for more information about The River Room at www.theriverroom.org.uk
