Oliver Thorne 3rd Dan Aikikai, is pleased to offer new regular Sunday training sessions at The River Room in Halton.

Aikido is a non-violent martial art which focuses on the development and transformation of the practitioner in the face of conflict situations. It is a non-competitive practice where each person takes time to learn through co-operation, to fall, roll, throw and strike in interesting and challenging ways, including through traditional weapons forms. Ultimately, aikido practice is not only about self-defence but it is also a process of self-transformation.

Oliver has over ten years of practice on a daily basis with extensive periods of uchi deshi (live in student) in both Europe and Japan totaling more than three years. He travels regularly to international seminars in Europe and to Japan to continue his training. Over the years he has had the great opportunity of training with some of the world’s most renowned aikido teachers. He is the Technical Director of Lancaster Aikido Club and Chief Instructor at Lancaster University Aikido Club.

These classes are open to beginners and more experienced practitioners alike.

Pick up and Drop off from/to Lancaster is possible, please ask for details

Pilates with Nickey Russell

I qualified as a chartered physiotherapist in 1999 and specialised in orthopaedics and trauma. My great passion from an early age was horse riding and through that I collected numerous injuries, imbalances and tight areas all of which were much improved when I started Pilates.
I continued daily Pilates throughout both my pregnancies and caesarian rehabs and then as my strength program for my current passion, fell running.

I qualified as a teacher with Body Control Pilates in 2015 and have run classes in Bentham, Milnthorpe, Lancaster, Ellel and now Halton. I still work part time at Spire Fylde Coast hospital in Blackpool and I do private 1:1 Pilates sessions.

Body Control is my preferred method of teaching Pilates as it places emphasis on correct alignment and muscle use so teaching the body to be efficient as well as strong. Pilates can range from an all-over “tone-up and de-stiffen” to a super hard abdominal and core workout for those in training for other sports.

Classes run by a Chartered Physiotherapist trained in the “Body Control Pilates” method.  It will cover the principles of Pilates and correct posture, basic anatomy and what is meant by “the core”. There will be some course notes and exercises to practice at home and we will look at using other small equipment to enhance and vary the exercises in the last couple of weeks.
It will be suitable for all ages and those who need a Pilates refresher or a gentle class.

This Hatha & Vinyasa Yoga class combines creative flow with a focus on specific postures and parts of the body. We synchronise breath with movement, build up strength, flexibility and finely tune our external and internal alignment. The class is for mixed ability but a certain level of physical fitness is advisable. It is a class in which you can choose to take it relatively easy or work up to stronger challenges, depending on how you feel on the day.

As in all my classes, this is about more than working your body – everything we practice physically in yoga is intimately informed  by an ancient, rich and fascinating  philosophy going back thousands of years  and yet more relevant today than ever. I weave aspects of this philosophy into the teaching of breathing techniques, physical postures, relaxation and meditation. Through my classes, my aim is for you to feel wonderfully stretched, spacious and strengthened, your breathing smooth and regular and with a deep sense of calm and alignment with what matters in life.

I first encountered yoga when I was a stressed 15 year old and my grandmother showed me a sequence of asanas (physical postures) to help focus and calm my mind. I continued to practise on an off, and in the last 10 years began to take it more seriously, establishing a regular practice. In 2014 I took this further by completing a British Wheel Foundation Course in preparation for teacher training on the British Wheel Teaching Diploma. I am now qualified as a Yoga Teacher with the British Wheel of Yoga (accounting for 500 hours of training). Teaching students of all ages and levels of experience has transformed my own relationship to yoga and confirmed this is what I most love doing!

Yoga with Rebecca: Yin & Restorative Yoga

In Yin Yoga we work very close to the mat, holding poses for between 3-5 minutes so to work deep into the connective tissue (Fascia) of the body. Yin tends not to work at a muscular level although sometimes it is beneficial to introduce a little bit of muscle and movement (yang) into a Yin practice. Yin can best be understood as an embodied meditation. We have time to become very intimate with our breath and our mind and through this beautiful practice experience ever-deepening tranquility and release. Sometimes we practice Restorative Yoga using lots of cushions, bolsters, blankets to find full comfort in the posture. In these classes, we give ourselves permission to fully rest and let go, focussing particularly on calming the nervous system.

Sandra teaches an adult yoga class suitable for all ages from sixteen onward. This is a mixed ability class and is suitable for all levels and abilities as all postures can be modified and you will never be asked to do anything that you feel uncomfortable with!

Classes begin with awareness of breath and sensations. Followed by a gentle warm-up sequence to free the joints and ease out any tight areas in the body. Then you will be guided through a series of postures to strengthen and stretch the body with the focus on breath awareness and we will finish with a guided relaxation to leave you feeling refreshed, restored and revitalised.

Yoga helps to tone and strengthen the body, remove tension and stiffness, promotes better breathing and circulation and creates a natural feeling of calmness and inner peace.
