This Summer Salutation Yoga workshop is for us to celebrate together the beginning of Summer which, strictly speaking, begins with the longest day of the year, the Solstice, on Monday 21st June.
I’ve been teaching a Solstice Salutation Workshop for the last few years, usually at 6am! Last year, we were on Zoom only and this year, you have the choice of being able to practice yoga together either by the river in the River Room, or from the comfort of your own homes. And we won’t be practicing so early in the morning!
You also have the choice of coming to the morning or afternoon session only, or coming to both which of course, I would recommend 😉
During the morning session, we will transition from a Grounding Meditation into Gentle Movement (inspired by Feldenkrais) to release tension in the body and to improve our mind-body connectivity, before lifting our energy in a Salutation Flow Sequence. The Salutation Flow will tune into and celebrate the forces of life that animate our very existence. In a way we always do this with any yoga practice but here we will explore specific salutation sequences that connect breath with movement and postures as expressions of gratitude towards our universe and our place within it. We will explore and move through Salutations to the Earth, Sun, Moon, Star & Self (there are many variations, and these ones are based on Nancy Gerstein’s “Guiding Yoga’s Light”).
We will grow an awareness of the different grounding, invigorating, cooling, expanding, balancing and loving attributes of these sequences. And by doing this, we will enquire into how our sense of self may expand from our own individual bodies to the wider energies and forms of the universe.
During the afternoon session, we will practice nourishing yin/restorative poses and pranayama (breathing practice) to re-ground and replenish. And of course, we’ll make sure to rest at the end of the day, in a long and delicious Yoga Nidra. The overall effect should be a beautiful combination of animating and soothing our physical and subtle energetic bodies. My aim is for us to fall in love with our true selves and with life around us.
This workshop is suitable for beginners through to more experienced yogi(ni)s. However, given the actively flowing nature of much of the morning sessions, it’s advisable to have a certain degree of physical fitness.
I am hoping that by this date all Covid Restrictions will have been dropped and so we can use the River Room equipment. However, if you have your own equipment (bolsters, cushions, blankets etc), please do bring that along. If you are coming for the full day, please bring a packed lunch.
