Mon
Pilates with Nickey Russell
Sep 21 @ 9:30 am – 10:30 am

I qualified as a chartered physiotherapist in 1999 and specialised in orthopaedics and trauma. My great passion from an early age was horse riding and through that I collected numerous injuries, imbalances and tight areas all of which were much improved when I started Pilates.
I continued daily Pilates throughout both my pregnancies and caesarian rehabs and then as my strength program for my current passion, fell running.

I qualified as a teacher with Body Control Pilates in 2015 and have run classes in Bentham, Milnthorpe, Lancaster, Ellel and now Halton. I still work part time at Spire Fylde Coast hospital in Blackpool and I do private 1:1 Pilates sessions.

Body Control is my preferred method of teaching Pilates as it places emphasis on correct alignment and muscle use so teaching the body to be efficient as well as strong. Pilates can range from an all-over “tone-up and de-stiffen” to a super hard abdominal and core workout for those in training for other sports.

Yoga for Beginners
Sep 21 @ 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm
Are you completely new to yoga or have you tried a couple of classes and want to develop a more regular practice? Are you looking to build strength and flexibility in your body as well as finding deep peace and relaxation? If so this class may well be for you. I should also say that a beginners class is actually good for all of us, whether or not we have weeks, months or years of Yoga experience – sometimes coming back to the beginning can bring a whole fresh insight and level of experience. We will learn about:

  • The subtleties of the breath and how important it is in relation to how we experience and move our body
  • The importance of relaxation as a way to find deep peace and space in our lives
  • How to access and experience common yoga poses and, most important, how to adapt them to suit our own bodies
  • The beauty of gentle flow as we sequence postures together (e.g. sun salutation)
  • The wider historical and philosophical context of Yoga beyond the physical practice

I absolutely love teaching yoga to all ages and levels of experience. Over the last few years I have realized that there is a gap in my teaching for beginners and so have decided to teach this new class and I’m excited about it.

What I would hope is that you will fall in love with yoga through this introduction to the practice and then can either continue for another course or move on to another class taught by me or by someone else. Yoga for Cyclists, Runners & Other Sports
Sep 21 @ 7:30 pm – 8:45 pm

I have been running a regular class for cyclists, focussing particularly on steadying and expanding the breath, opening the hips, hamstrings and shoulders and strengthening the core and inner thighs. As a whole range of people have been coming to this class, most often seeking stretching, strengthening and release in relation to some kind of sporting activity, I thought I’d expand the class to include runners, climbers, canoeists, walkers etc. This class is suitable for beginners or for those of you with more experience as you will be invited to engage with the sequences according to your own ability and energy on the day. My aim is for you to feel fully open and relaxed by the end of the class.

The classes will run at 7.30 – 8.45pm on Monday nights.

I believe that it’s worth coming to weekly classes in order to feel the progression but am also aware that this won’t work for everyone. And so drop-in is also possible. See www.rebeccayoga.org.uk for more details

If you’d like any more information please email Rebecca on rebecca@theriverroom.org.uk or call 07907374278

Meditation in Strange Times with Will Medd
Sep 21 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm

Meditation in Strange Times with Will Medd

6 week on-line course

Starts Monday 14th September for 6 weeks

8.00 – 9.30 pm, on Zoom

Living in these strange times, meditation offers a simple, powerful and timeless practice that has become an inner haven for many people. In cultivating awareness of groundedness, connection, aliveness and compassion, people have been able to nurture a sense of clarity, purpose and possibility in this uncertain world.

Where to start though? This course offers both an introduction to fundamentals of meditation, including mindfulness and loving kindness, while inviting you to explore how you can bring the insights of meditation into your everyday life.  This will include exploring how to be with the more difficult situations and emotional challenges you encounter, as well as to experience more fully the beauty of life.

While working online isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, there is the advantage of being able to practice within your own space. If needing to cut out noise, headphones are recommended!

Suitable for beginners and for those who want to take their meditation further, the focus over six weeks will be exploring how to develop your own practice, including:

  • cultivating an inner sanctuary – a place of groundedness and connection
  • mindfulness of the body, breath, thoughts and emotions
  • nurturing loving kindness, joy and compassion
  • being with difficult situations, emotions and thoughts
  • the role of observation and awareness in everyday life

As well as the weekly class, participants will be encouraged to join morning meditations on Tuesday and Thursdays and will also have access to recordings of the practices from the classes.  There will also be the possibility of a 1-1 session.

Given the difficult economic situation for many people, there is no charge for this course. For those that feel able you are invited to contribute a donation to Will.

To register your interest please email Will and let him know (willmedd@gmail.com). During August you’ll get an out-of-office reply.  He will then make contact in the first week of September to answer any queries and confirm arrangements and Zoom details.

About Will

Will first began meditating as a student over 25 years ago, learning mindfulness and loving kindness meditations. After a long gap, and revitalised by yoga practices, Will came back to meditation as an important practice to both navigate and celebrate all that life offers.  As a professional life coach his passion is in enabling people to feel fully alive and at peace – while also of course trying to do that himself!

He is trained as a mindfulness teacher and is a Certified iRest Teacher.  As such, the course builds on various traditions of meditation, particular building on the teachings of the meditative heart of yoga though a practice called iRest®.   iRest has been developed over 40 years by Dr. Richard Miller and associates, drawing on the ancient tradition of Yoga Nidra (the meditative heart of yoga) and adapted to the conditions of modern life.

As an experienced teacher will likes to create a relaxed atmosphere that is invitational, experiential and experimental. He’s worked on Zoom for the past 6 years hosting groups and is happy in creating a comfortable mode of working online.

Feedback from previous courses

“I looked forward to coming each week. I use the breathing exercises and do short meditations which are extremely relaxing.  I am more aware of myself in the world which is interesting!..  I found it addictive! The 1:1 was really good.  It was interesting to delve into your thoughts, something I hadn’t done. Thank you it was all fabulous.”

“I loved the course. The 1:1 was an excellent way to focus on the process and really allowed me to get it in a very personal and real way at my own pace with my issue …I would say it’s a unique comprehensive meditation experience that offers a range of tools that can to use to help maintain a healthy balance of perspective to respond to life”

“I enjoyed the course and found it very supportive and engaging. It was well-organised and the booklet and the emails with the sessions was so useful with the meditation at home.”

“You will not be the same person who walked in the door on the first day. You will be a better, happier, functioning you, when you walk back out”

“Thoroughly enjoyed the course and the highlight for me was the 1-1 … The quality and quantity of my sleep has improved and my anxiety levels are much improved”

Yoga with Rebecca: Hatha & Vinyasa Flow
Sep 22 @ 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm

This Hatha & Vinyasa Yoga class combines creative flow with a focus on specific postures and parts of the body. We synchronise breath with movement, build up strength, flexibility and finely tune our external and internal alignment. The class is for mixed ability but a certain level of physical fitness is advisable. It is a class in which you can choose to take it relatively easy or work up to stronger challenges, depending on how you feel on the day.

As in all my classes, this is about more than working your body – everything we practice physically in yoga is intimately informed  by an ancient, rich and fascinating  philosophy going back thousands of years  and yet more relevant today than ever. I weave aspects of this philosophy into the teaching of breathing techniques, physical postures, relaxation and meditation. Through my classes, my aim is for you to feel wonderfully stretched, spacious and strengthened, your breathing smooth and regular and with a deep sense of calm and alignment with what matters in life.

Yoga with Rebecca: Yin & Restorative Yoga
Sep 23 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm

In Yin Yoga we work very close to the mat, holding poses for between 3-5 minutes so to work deep into the connective tissue (Fascia) of the body. Yin tends not to work at a muscular level although sometimes it is beneficial to introduce a little bit of muscle and movement (yang) into a Yin practice. Yin can best be understood as an embodied meditation. We have time to become very intimate with our breath and our mind and through this beautiful practice experience ever-deepening tranquility and release. Sometimes we practice Restorative Yoga using lots of cushions, bolsters, blankets to find full comfort in the posture. In these classes, we give ourselves permission to fully rest and let go, focussing particularly on calming the nervous system.

This is about more than working your body – everything we practice physically in yoga is intimately informed  by an ancient, rich and fascinating  philosophy going back thousands of years  and yet more relevant today than ever. I weave aspects of this philosophy into the teaching of breathing techniques, physical postures, relaxation and meditation.
